 | Mercury MerCruiser hasreplaced the old-style choke throughout its carburetted enginesrange with a new turn-key starting system and automatic fuelenrichment. The result is consistent starting, even in coldweather, without any need for priming or throttle adjustments. Thissystem is being fitted to all new carburettor sterndrives andinboards. It will be made available as an accessory forretro-fitting on existing Mercury MerCruiser petrol enginesmanufactured since 1977.
Athird-generation cool fuel module, Gen III, is being made standardon all multi-port fuel injection (MPI) engines coupled to Bravodrives or fitted as inboards. This is an integrated unit consistingof fuel pumps, regulator, fuel filter and cooler. With its top-loadfuel filter, the removal of water does not require filterreplacement. Pump noise is reduced by eight decibels and there are16 fewer connection points, adding to reliability.
The latestserpentine belt drive system with dynamic belt tensioner reducesnoise and vibration considerably on big block engines. One of thosebig blocks, the 8.15-litre V8 inboard, now features electronicshift. The SmartCraft Digital Throttle & Shift (DTS) usessolenoid-controlled hydraulics to shift gears and pressure sensorsto monitor clutch pack performance. This results in reliable shiftsand exceptional durability. The transmission is protected from lowor high fuel levels and clogged filters.
MercuryMerCruiser is making its audio warning system standard equipment onall three-litre engines. This gives boaters added peace of mind bywarning of poor oil pressure, high engine temperature and low drivelubrication levels. Finally, with the growing use of larger swimplatforms, all MerCruiser sterndrives now feature a revised exhaustgeometry with dry-joint technology, for safety andcomfort.
