"New Mercury Racing HP600 SCi Sterndrive"02/02/2005
Mercury Racingintroduced the all-new HP600 SCi sterndrive engine Saturday,January 29, at the opening of the Los Angeles Boat Show.Manufacturing is ramping up production now to meet an unusuallystrong demand for this highly anticipated replacement for thepopular 575 SCi engine package. The 600SCiachieves impeccable dock manners and thrilling throttle responsewith a "clean-sheet" induction system design. Some of the keyfeatures contributing to the awesome drivability are active torquemanagement, sequential port fuel injection, individual coilignition, a roller camshaft and dedicated PCM controlstrategies. The only thingthe 600 SCi has in common with the 575 SCi is the CNC machined 502cubic inch cylinder block. Every component was meticulouslyengineered ensuring the new engine "raises the bar" for combiningshear performance with uncompromised drivability and the durabilityto stand behind a full-year warranty.A custom intakemanifold is the heart of Mercury Racing's designed inductionsystem. It houses an internally o-ring flange sealed intercooler. The intercooler is made of copper-nickel alloy called"CuproNickel" for excellent corrosion resistance. Boostbypass is achieved via an internal cast passage. The intake alsofeatures port fuel injection and a fuel cross over passage whicheliminates tee fittings by routing fuel to both port and starboardfuel rails for enhanced engine aesthetics.A new inductionhardened, micro-alloy crankshaft features larger journal radii forenhanced strength and durability. Fuel economy is enhanced thanksto new pistons developed exclusively for the 600 SCi. Connectingrods are longer and feature a floating wrist pin.Like its 525 EFIand 1075 SCi siblings, the 600 SCi comes equipped with the Mercuryexclusive Propulsion Control Module (PCM) 03 microprocessor.Combining the powerful engine management computer with a 3.3 LiterLysholm screw type supercharger, roller camshaft, and sequentialfuel injection results in impeccable idle quality, instant throttleresponse and unmatched performance throughout the 4800-5200 rpmrated engine operating range. The 600 SCi's use of new PCM idlespeed control strategies give ultra-smooth shifting for the BravoXR drive. The PCM 03computer also enables individual cylinder control. This ability tooptimize fuel, spark timing and knock control independently foreach cylinder enhances engine running quality, performance, fueleconomy, and durability.Higher fuelpressure demands are met with a new electric fuel pump. The engineis also equipped with fuel cooling and a mechanical pump to combatvapor lock. To improve packaging and reduce fuel connections, acustom billet aluminum housing was created to accommodate the fuelpressure regulator and water separating fuel filter.Superchargerboost is variable. A boost bypass control valve, electronicallyactivated by the PCM 03 microprocessor, continuously adjusts theamount of boost needed to provide consistent horsepower. Underoptimum ambient conditions, the boost bypass control valve willopen to adjust for the lower boost required to obtain 600crankshaft horsepower. The PCM 03 controller closes the bypasscontrol valve, to provide active torque management throughout theengine operating rpm range and additional boost required tomaintain a consistent 600 horsepower when operating in sub-optimalrunning conditions and limited higher altitude environments. The600 SCi's ability to provide a consistent horsepower in anycondition or locale eliminates the hassle of re-propping the boatto match conditions. The 600 SCicomes equipped with the digital SmartCraft Controller Area Network(CAN) system, a network of sensors that proactively monitor enginefunctions. The next wave in boating, SmartCraft Integrated MarineTechnology from Mercury links power, controls and internal andexternal sensors to provide precise data on all boat functions at aglance. The system monitors a variety of vital engine functionsincluding fuel flow, fuel range, fuel used, and RPM, along withwater depth, trim angle, water pressure and batteryvoltage.A 14-pin Deutschconnector on engine harness enables ignition functions andSmartCraft functions to be incorporated into one boat harness, saving rigging time. The PCM 03 alsodrives the exclusive Engine GuardianTM System. Engine Guardianmonitors engine functions to forewarn of possible problems thatcould lead to engine damage. This "smart" technology not onlydetects and alerts the boater of a problem; it processes the dataand reduces power to a maximum, safe level that allows the boaterto continue operation. Engine Guardian also has the ability toproactively help prevent engine overheating by sensing not onlyengine temperature but cooling water pressure as well. By sensingwater pressure, and temperature, the system can provide advancedwarning to the PCM 03 control module, which then reduces enginepower before temperature related engine damage takesplace.Like the 525EFI, the 600 SCi features a factory installed closed-coolingsystem. Five-year coolant increases corrosion protection, reducingmaintenance costs and hassle. The system cools the entire enginecylinder block and aluminum cylinder heads. New "cool collar"Sweeper Headers feature a new alloy for enhanced saltwatercorrosion resistance and durability. A multipoint manual waterdrain system makes winterizing easier. The 600SCi isthe second engine to be accredited by Mercury Racing's T.E.A.M.(Total Engine Application Management) initiative. The standardizedTEAM process ensures proper installation of the engine with factoryspecified components, providing maximum performance along withunmatched quality and durability. The 600 SCi will only be sold toOEM boat builders and dealers who agree to the terms of the TEAMaccreditation process.2006 600 SCi KeyFeatures - Lysholm 3.3Liter screw type supercharger featuringMercury Racing's front drive housing with integrated oil levelsight glass.
