"Seebold Wins Inaugural Sault Ste. Marie River Rampage"24/06/2004
Tim Seebold of OsageBeach, Mo., driving his Mercury Racing 2.5 Liter Champoutboard-powered Bud Light tunnel boat, led all 50 laps to win theinaugural Sault Ste. Marie & Kewadin Casino River Rampage Champclass race Sunday, June 20, in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. Seeboldaveraged 117.962 mph over the 1.125-mile course to win the event.The race was round two of the 2004 Champ Boat Series presented byMercury Racing.Seebold had a10-second lead by lap 25. Jason Campbell of Chandler, Ariz., movedup on Seebold throughout the race, reducing his 10-second lead tojust four seconds toward the end of the event - finishing second.Todd Bowden of Monrovia, Calif., winner of the June 6 season openerin New Roads, La., placed third. Defending champ Terry Rinkler ofRiverview, Fla., finished fourth. Lynn Simburger of Elsah, Ill.,rounded out fifth. Matt Sadl of Fenton, Mo., who finished sixth,was the highest finishing Sea-Way Marine rookiecandidate.Heat racesusually contested on Saturdays were postponed until Sunday due tohigh winds that created dangerous conditions on the St. Mary'sRiver. Bowde,n and Chris Fairchild of North Aurora, Ill were thewinners of the Champ class 10-lap qualifiers.SST-120Two-time SST 120champion Vince Voisin of Atlanta, Ga., averaged 100.217 mph in hisMercury Racing SST 120 race outboard powered tunnel boat to win the30-lap SST 120 contest. Voisin, who led the race fromstart-to-finish, crossed the finish line six seconds ahead of BillRucker of Oakdale, Calif., Kris Shepard of Antioch, Ill., Seebold,and Garrett Armstrong of Hartland, Wisc., rounded out 3-5. SST 120heat races were won by Voisin and Shepard. The second SST-120 heatwas plagued by accidents. Ken Brunner of Linwood, Mich.,barrel-rolled at the second turn, stopping the race. J.R. Saffoldof Tampa, Fla., experienced a violent stuff after his boat hit arouge roller wave on the course. His boat submarined and sufferedsubstantial damage. Thankfully, both drivers escapedunscathed.The Sault Ste.Marie & Kewadin Casino River Rampage will be broadcast 9 p.m.CDT on The Outdoor Channel's Speed Zone Wednesday, Aug. 4. Roundthree of the 2004 Champ Boat Series presented by Mercury Racing isthe Bay City River Roar, June 25-27.
